We were fortunate to a get a private screening of Michael Rapaport's directorial debut, the documentary Beats, Rhymes, and Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, days before its official premier at the Sundance Film Festival this past weekend. Stories of the controversy surrounding the film have been circulating for some time, but the distraction is unfortunate, because the documentary truly delivers.
It was great to discover what went into the making of 3 definitive hip hop classics that helped shape the sound of the 90's. The documentary's candid depiction of the influential rap group, from inception and rise to its unexpected break up, shows an intimate and sometimes uncomfortable look into the group's complicated dynamic. What shines through, though, is the magnitude of Tribe's impact and their unconditional love for the music itself. It was great to finally see some justice done on behalf of the music that has given us all so much. A documentation, indeed. Look out for it in the near future, in the meantime Here is the trailer:
